Presentation on theme: "Work Work happens when a force moves an object over a distance."— Presentation transcript:

1 Work Work happens when a force moves an object over a distance.
If the object does not move, NO work is done! (Scientifically speaking)

2 Work There are times when no work is done even though you’re exerting a force.

3 Work Stand and hold your arms out in front of you at waist level, palms up. Have your partner stack two books on your hands, one on each hand. Lift the books to about shoulder level, then lower them. Now try raising them overhead

4 Describe your observations to your partner.
Work When your hands are overhead, are you working harder than when you raised them to shoulder level? Describe your observations to your partner.

5 Describe your observations to your partner.
Work Have your partner put one more books on each of your hands, so you’re holding three books. Try to raise them to shoulder level. Are you pushing harder (using more force) than when you were holding only two books? Describe your observations to your partner.

6 Describe your observations to your partner.
Work Hold the three books at shoulder level until your arms get tired. Are you exerting force? Do you think you are doing work in these situations? What is the work being done on? Describe your observations to your partner.

7 Work Equation for Work: Work = Force X Distance or W = F x d Unit = Joules (J) How much work would you do if you bench pressed the bar 5 m with 10 N of force?

11 Power Power is the amount of work done in a certain amount of time. Rate at which work is done. Machines are used to help us do work in LESS Time.

12 Power Equation for Power: Power = Work time P = W t Unit: Watt (W)
How much power does it take to move a stroller with 40 J in 5 seconds?
