How Populations Grow Growth rates tend to change depending on the resources available to the organisms in the population There are two basic patterns of population growth: Exponential Logistic

Exponential Growth: Exponential Growth: when a population increases by a fixed percentage each year Usually occurs when a small population of organisms are introduced to a new environment with ideal conditions Normally not sustained for very long because the resources of the environment are limited

Logistic Growth Logistic growth: describes how a population’s initial exponential growth is slowed and finally stopped by limiting factors Limiting factors: characteristics/factors of the environment that limit population growth; determine population’s carrying capacity
