Figure 1 | Changes in LUT function associated with ageing. Physiological changes in the kidneys and bladder explain, to a certain extent, the occurrence of commonly observed age-associated changes in lower urinary tract (LUT) function. These include a reduction in urine production by the kidneys and increased collagen content and incidences of spontaneous contractions of the bladder, with reduced contractile function and filling sensitivity, resulting in an increase in post-void residual volume, and possibly a reduction in bladder capacity.
