The Collapse of the Grand Narrative
Post-modern society and Lyotard see 'grand narratives' or metanarratives as a quintessential feature of modernity. Lyotard and Post- Modernism criticise this grand narrative and consider its death as a feature of this movement
8
Lyotard proposed that metanarratives should give way to petits récits, or more modest and "localized" narratives, which can 'throw off' the grand narrative by bringing into focus the singular event.
9
Postmodernists attempt to replace metanarratives by focusing on specific local contexts as well as the diversity of human experience. They argue for the existence of a "multiplicity of theoretical standpoints“ rather than grand, all-encompassing theories.
10
Task: Find 2 examples of Grand or Meta-Narratives and explain why they can be seen this way (apply narrative theory learnt)
11
Find two examples of texts which show the collapse of the Grand Narrative and therefore follow Lyotard’s theory (and hence, are Post Modern!)
