ちょう しょく 朝食 Teach the meaning of breakfast. I’ll write these symbols on the board at this stage. I put natto in the back but they won’t know what it is (breakfast food). Might get some reactions from it as it does look pretty disgusting!

朝+食 = ??? Therefore, 朝食 means BREAKFAST. I’ll wait for students to give a response. I’ll Explain these are normal Australian types of breakfast.

朝食 Here I will do the mind map on the board, first asking students for suggestions. Then I will give them the handout.

Then I am going to make it explicit that the ones in red sound like their English counterparts, so it is easier to remember!

OR いいえ ______ が すきじゃないです。 These will be written on the board and explained by putting in pictures of two breakfast foods (Toast and Pancakes – sound English). Students will then ask their neighbouring student. I only put this slide on so you can see what I am going to teach. Then it can lead on to the synthesising task.

SYNTHESISING TASK We will then explain that students have to interview each other with the survey sheet. Explain the survey sheet. Put “maru” or “batsu” in the box depending on answer. We can demonstrate first one. ETC ………………
