Presentation on theme: "Information, Communication and Technology"— Presentation transcript:

1 Information, Communication and Technology
ICT Information, Communication and Technology Students to put name on paper- no hands when I ask a question but you can put your hand up if you have one Use the papers to draw student names when a question is asked. Open a word document and the classroom teacher (if presenting this to a class) or a student who is a good typist to write down the words he/she hears used in class today. She is going to keep typing the things that she/he hears said today and if she/he hears something more than once she/he will put those things down as many times as she hears them. Have them save this to a flash key as they go.

2 Goals for Today we want students to learn about how to demonstrate respect for the privacy and intellectual property of others and maintain their personal privacy and safety while online want students to begin to identify social and ethical issues associated with the global access and distribution of information; and to develop concern for the accuracy of information, personal privacy and safety when in electronic environments such as Internet. These are from the curriculum ICT document grades 4-6 outcomes- this should be updated to reflect the grade that this is being delivered to. See the ICT document at and choose policies and procedures and you can download a spreadsheet of the outcomes to cut and paste or the document itself. These are fairly wordy and difficult to understand but the next slide puts the goals of this session in student friendly language.

3 What does that really mean?
Students should understand how to be safe and responsible online and how to create a digital footprint to be proud of today and tomorrow too

4 Let’s talk about it… What technology do you use and what do you use if for? How much of what you read on the internet is true? How do you know what to believe online? What do you think are some things that you should consider before clicking send on a text or ? If every message you sent was printed in the paper too would you send it? How would you feel if someone said something bad about you online and what would you do about it? What can you do to make sure that you don’t hurt the feelings of other people when you are online? Number the students in the class with A and B alternatively. Have the A’s stand in a line along a counter, across the back of the room… where ever it works best. Have the B’s stand in front of an A (facing the A person) Present the first question and ask the A person to begin the conversation. Ring a bell or make some signal to have the discussion wrap up. Then go to the second question and have the B person begin the conversation. Have B students move two people to the right and repeat the process with the next few questions. Have students move two people to the right again. This will be the last partner and they will do the next activity with them. Everything is connected- nothing is truly private on line- IP addresses

5 What is your digital footprint most like?
What happens to your footprint when you walk in the sand? What happens though if it is in concrete or even in a fossil like this? 1.5 million years old this footprint is in rock and is a fossil that was found in Africa Do you know that everytime you use your computer or phone you leave a digital footprint and it is more like the lasting print than the sand print.

6 Your Footprint Each partner will trace the other partner’s footprint on the paper Return to seats On your heal- put the name of an adult you trust and respect Add one more name- this could be someone famous that you admire Have the first two partners get two large pieces of paper (11 X17) and a marker be careful when tracing the footprints.

7 Is it true? Does the site have an author?
Does it clearly explain what is the purpose of the site? Is the information relevant to you? Is it useful? Can it be checked? Does the site contain a list of resources? Are there links? When was the site updated? Is the site biased? Does it present information from only one point of view? Does it make sense to you? Once people created all the content for us and now we create many things ourselves. We need to ask certain questions when we are looking at information on a website.

8 What are two things that you are going to look remember next time you look at site on the internet?

9 Our Online World What do you do online?
Erase sample above before using. This is for illustration purpose only. Use the pencil tool in ppt to draw the information that students tell you and show how these are all connected together. Make links- do you share everything and respond to everything people ask you Do you know everyone in friend list? Do you know that lists like that connect everyone together. View the video that is linked to show how things are connected. You will need speakers so that it can be heard.

10 What are two things you can do to be safer on line?
These can be added to the box but should also go on each person’s footprint. When ever you see the footprint logo as above it is a cue for something that can be added t othe footprint.

11 The real test- What would your two people say?
If what ever you do online can be traced back to you and it stays forever what should you put online? This can be discussed and added to the box as indicated. Remember to pull student names to solicite full participation and on task behaviour. Put names back in as students can easily be called on multiple times.

12 Put on your digital footprint two words to describe what you want people to believe about you from your online communications. What footprint do you want to leave? Have students circle these two words so that they stand out.

13 Put on your digital footprint two things you will be sure to do when you are communicating online.
Depending on group you may want to omit or revise this question

14 How did we do? Do you know how long what you put on lines exists?
Do you know what the standard is for appropriate and inappropriate online behaviour? Do you know what a digital footprint means? Do you know how to take your steps to have a digital footprint that you will be proud of today and tomorrow too? Use thumbs to show where people are at. Up for I know, sideways for I think I know and down for I don’t know.

15 What were the most important things that we said today?
And now for ’s work What were the most important things that we said today? Insert name of the person who was keeping the word document with the words that were said Get the flash key and put it in the projection computer. Open the word document and select all and copy. Paste these into the space in the link provided. You will now have a wordle document that can be printed that highlights the key discussion of this session. This and the footprints will serve as reminders and the footprints can be continued as new tracks in the classroom are made.
