Nearly 1 in 10 high school students have been hit, slapped, or physically hurt, on purpose, by a boyfriend or girlfriend. Nearly half of all teens in relationships say they know friends who have been verbally abused.

Between 20% and 45% of high school students have experienced some form of physical, emotional, or sexual violence by a dating partner (Foshee, 1996; OKeefe, 1997), and nearly half of the worst incidents they experience occur at school (Molidor, Tolman & Kober, 2000).

Nearly three-quarters of 1,430 7th grade students surveyed reported talking to their parents about dating and teen dating violence (RTI International, 2012).

Studies suggest that rates of dating violence among gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth are comparable or even higher than those for heterosexual couples (Elze, 2002; Freedner, Freed, Yang & Austin, 2002).

18.7%, 41.2%, and 31.2% of 1,398 urban high school students from 22 public high schools in Boston, Massachusetts, reported past-month perpetration of physical domestic violence, peer violence, and sibling violence, respectively. At 7.9%, the perpetration of domestic violence only was rare among violence perpetrators (Rothman et al., 2010).
