III. The Warren Court Took and activist stand on many leading issues including segregation and 1st Amendment Rights. Greatly expanded the rights of the accused addressing such issues as illegally obtained evidence, free lawyers and reading of rights. Engle v. Vitale No Mandatory religious prayer in schools

IV. Fight for voting equality
CORE and SNCC traveled through the South to register African-Americans to vote. In Mississippi three volunteers were murdered by Klansmen and local police.

C. SCLC led a series of marches in Selma, Alabama to protest disenfranchisement of African-American voters.

V. Watts Riots An incident between a police officer and an African-American driver escalated into a large fight. The community was outraged by the actions of the police and rioted for 6 days. The underlying causes of the riot are debated but many point to high levels of unemployment and racism by the police .

VI. Black Panthers Armed citizen patrols to monitor police officers.
Instituted a variety of social programs such as free breakfast for children .
