3. Introduction to “To Kill A Mockingbird”
In Chapter 1, we are introduced to many of the key characters including:
Jean Louise Finch – known as Scout
Jem – Scout’s older brother
Atticus Finch – Scout’s father and lawyer in Maycomb
Charles Baker Harris – known as Dill
Arthur “Boo” Radley – the almost mythical neighbor
Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch and Mary Badham as Scout in the 1962 film adaptation of the novel.

4. So … What’s In the First Chapter?
The history of Scout’s and Jem’s family – Atticus was one of the first people in his family to make it outside the farm.
Jem has a broken arm – we find out the complete story why later in the novel.
Dill moves into town – he only resides in Maycomb during the summer with his aunt, Miss Rachel Haverford.

5. Boo? Who is that and why should we care?
Arthur “Boo” Radley is almost a ghost-like person in Maycomb, very few (if any) people have seen him.
Legends say he is crazy, among other things.
He lived with his father and his brother Nathan. His father died a few years back.
Despite rumors of his insanity, Boo’s father refused to send him to any type of hospital or asylum.

Mentioning Boo Radley and his unknown history is not a mistake on Lee’s part – that is something to keep in mind while reading the entire novel.
