Natural Polymers Aiming for Grade 4: State an example of a natural polymer. Describe the relationship between sugar as a monomer and starch or cellulose as a polymer. Describe the relationship between amino acids as a monomer and protein as a polymer. Aiming for Grade 6: Identify the monomer from the structural formula of a polymer. Describe the structure of an amino acid. Aiming for Grade 8: Predict the products of condensation polymerisation using natural monomers. Explain in detail the process of condensation polymerisation with natural monomers, including using equations. Explain how amino acids react together in an acid–base reaction.

Task Natural polymers found in all living things include proteins, starch and cellulose. You are going to write a short item for a science magazine about the importance of natural polymers. Your item should include: an explanation of the words polymer and monomer, and the names of the types of monomers from which these polymers are made word equations for the polymerisation reactions the differences between starch and cellulose their importance in living things. Your item can be a piece of writing or a poster and should include diagrams or images.
