Dynamics of the elliptical galaxy NGC 4697 from integrated light and PNe Niranjan Sambhus, Flavio De Lorenzi, Ortwin Gerhard (Basel)
2
Science Issues: internal dynamics of normal ellipticals, extended to outer regions content and distribution of dark matter in halos of such galaxies NGC 4697: E4 elliptical, D = 10.5 Mpc Presence of inner disk Lack of large scale gas distribution at outer radii Axisymmetric light profile Inclination close to edge-on Kinematic data for 500 PNes extending upto 3 Reff
3
Deprojecting the galaxy:
Assumption: Density approximated as an oblate axisymmetric spheroid, seen edge-on Method: Deconvolution using RL algorithm major axis minor axis
4
Mass modeling M2M: Self-consistent N-body code (Syer-
Tremaine algorithm) Mass-to-light ratio Input: Spherical harmonic decomposition of density profile Kinematic observables as constraints
5
Planetary Nebulae in NGC 4697
PNes: Kinematic indicators of underlying stellar distribution. Non-parametric recovery of a smooth mean velocity distribution, consistent with errors.
6
PNe Kinematics
7
Kinematics: PNe, Absorption lines, and N-body model
9
Results till date... Best-fit (M/L)R ~ 7.7 (not conclusive, though)
Equatorial plane kinematics affected by inner disk Except along major axis, PNe velocity field appears to match the absorption line data, as well as the N-body model (without DM). Need .... to ascertain the PNe kinematic fields to incorporate disk in the N-body model and check the contribution from DM, if at all.
