1
Movement of heat caused by conduction, convection, and radiation
Susan Yurkhanova
2
Three Ways Heat Travels
Conduction- heat that passes between substances that are in direct contact with each other Convection- up and down movement of gases and liquids; convection current Radiation- electromagnetic waves that travel through space; does not need medium to transfer
3
Examples Conduction- holding a metal rod above a fire
Convection- air in our atmosphere Radiation- heat coming from fire
4
Experiment Materials- Color changing shirt (Del Sol) Sun Directions-
Stand outside with shirt, wait and color will begin to change
5
Explanation What happened? How did it happen? Why did it happen?
Sun made ink in the shirt change Color became visible How did it happen? The sun shined on the color changing shirt It changed the ink which made color appear Why did it happen? Radiation takes a BIG part in this experiment The ink went through a physical change The molecules changed state
6
Explanation Radiation- the sun made the ink go through a physical change, and the molecules changed state which made color appear Conduction- the chemical of the ink was in contact with the sun’s rays
