3 Note-taking Recording notes from oral or written sources.
Paraphrasing … material into one's own words. Summarising the main ideas. A strategy for making information meaningful.

7 Characteristics of good notes:
Brief, accurate and concise. Made up of key words. Contain headings and sub headings. Follow the sense organization of original source.

8 Why taking notes? evaluate what they are reading.
Helps students concentrate on and evaluate what they are reading. Improves comprehension. Forces ss to think critically. Makes it easier to distinguish between important & less important details. Useful for writing summaries, reviews or reports. Helena Butterfield IRS 2007

9 What is summarizing? It's a process of condensing, or shortening, a reading selection while preserving its overall meaning.

10 Reasons to make summaries!!
To explore your understanding of a reading. To demonstrate your understanding of the course reading. To establish the ideas that your essay will evaluate or analyze. To inform the reader. To extract the main ideas ( the points that you think are most important ) To distinguish between main points& secondary details.

11 Guidelines for writing a summary:
Read the text carefully, to understand its purpose & structure. 2. Determine the significance of each idea & the way it's linked to other ideas and examples 3. Decide what you are going to include in your summary & what you are going to leave out.

12 4. Group the essential information & ideas you have selected in an order that shows the relationships of ideas & facts. 5. Write a sentence that reveals what the whole section is about. 6. Identify author & title if you are summarizing an entire essay or article)
