1 Skeletal & Muscular Systems

2 How many bones do you know?
clavical Patella (Knee Cap)

3 What are the functions of the skeletal system?
Provides shape to the body Muscle attachment Protects certain organs

4 What organs are protected?
Heart & Lungs Brain

5 How many bones do we have in our body?
206 Babies are born with 270 soft bones - about 64 more than an adult; and many of these will fuse together by the age of twenty or twenty-five into the 206 hard, permanent bones. **VIDEO

6 Define Joint: The point where 2 bones come together.

7 Types of joints Pivot (Swivel): Rotation around a fixed point
Ellipsoidal: Allows movement in all ways except rotation. Saddle : allows movement in two directions. Ball & socket: round end of one bone fits into cup like end of another, most movement Hinge: Simplest joint, allows backward and forward movement. Plane (Gliding): 2 flat surfaces of bone slide over each other.

8 What connects bone to bone at a joint?
Ligaments

9 What is the tissue that connects muscle to bone?
Tendon The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the human body and can withstand forces of 1,000 pounds or more. But it is also the most vulnerable and frequently ruptured tendon.

10 What cushions the bones in a joint?
Cartilage

11 Muscular System **VIDEO

12 What muscles do you know?

13 Deltoids Trapezius Pectorals Triceps Bicep Latissimus Dorsi Abs Gluteus Maximus Quadriceps Hamstrings Gastrocnemius

14 What are the functions of the Muscular System?
Movement Creates heat Protection of the joints

15 How do muscles work together to cause movement?
The muscles work in pairs to keep your body moving When one muscle contracts (shortens), the other one relaxes (lengthens) Ex… the biceps and triceps muscles work as a pair to bend and straighten the arm (flexion and extension)

16 Aerobic vs. Anaerobic… what’s the difference?

17 Aerobic Activities… The body uses oxygen to strengthen the heart and lungs, builds endurance.

18 Anaerobic Activities…
used for building muscle cell size

19 Why is it important to have both aerobic and anaerobic activities?
What are some examples of both?
