The Republican Army Training
In the days of the early Roman army every soldier had to provide his own equipment, supplies and food. landless and poor excluded rich composed the cavalry All the soldiers of Rome had three things in common. They were organized disciplined loyal Training All new recruits to the army became very fit and disciplined. Training was harsh, as were serve punishments for failure. Importance was placed on physical conditioning weapons training strategies

The Roman Army The real success of the Roman Army came from their organization. During the republic the army was divided into groups of 100 called a century. Each century was commanded by a centurion. Within each century men were organized into smaller highly disciplined groups or around 10 called contuberium. During the times of Imperialistic Rome the army would be reorganized into Legions (6000). Each legion was divided into lots of smaller groups and included a cavalry, messengers, engineers, doctors and a catapult maker. The Roman army would have between legions

The Roman was very creative and use many different strategies depending on the situation. One of the more famous battle formation was called the ``tortoise`` which allowed them to advance on an enemy under the safety of their shields.

Hanging on to new Territories It is Often difficult to hang on new territories. Rome was able to so peaceful using political and military policies to become the “Mother of Italy”. Political Policies Rome never destroyed cities, but granted them certain rights. some made full Roman citizens some made Roman citizen with Private Rights some allowed to become autonomous some allowed to become “allies” All had to provide troops and taxes to Rome Military Policies Rome settled soldiers on the captured lands as payment for their service. made fighting for Rome lucrative Romans had permanent military settlers in conquered lands allowed for peace within Italy protection from foreign invasion swift and harsh response to rebellions (sold into slavery) Rome started building an extensive network of roads to keep in contact with it’s soldier in service
