1
Cell Cycle Worksheet Learning Targets List the steps of mitosis and the main events in each phase. Explain the purpose of mitosis
2
The Cell Cycle A cell’s life can be explained using the Cell Cycle. This is the period of time from the beginning of one cell division to the beginning of the next.
3
The cell cycle During G 1 phase of the Cell Cycle, the cell grows & all of the cell parts (except for the DNA) is duplicated.
4
The cell cycle During S phase of the Cell Cycle, the cell’s DNA is replicated (copied).
5
The cell cycle During G 2 phase of the Cell Cycle, the cell continues to grow. The cell also proofreads itself to check if everything is in good shape so that it can prepare for cell division (mitosis).
6
The cell cycle During M phase (mitosis) of the Cell Cycle, the cell divides to produce 2 identical daughter cells.
7
mitosis Cell division (mitosis) must take place so that the cell doesn’t become too large.
8
mitosis Cells that are too large will need too much nutrients, produce too much waste, & make too many demands on DNA.
9
Mitosis is rapid somatic cell division.
10
Mitosis makes more “body” cells.
11
Cell differentiation After rapid cell division, these cells are sorted into different groups.
12
After rapid cell division, these cells are assigned their “jobs”.
Cell differentiation After rapid cell division, these cells are assigned their “jobs”.
13
The cell cycle During G 0 phase of the Cell Cycle, the cell exits the cell cycle. Some cells stop dividing. Many cells never divide again like our nerve and muscle cell Some cells can re-enter the cycle and divide (i.e. liver cells)
