2 Hapsburg Big Shots Through a series of carefully arranged marriages, the Hapsburg family gained substantial territory and power in the German states In this case, absolute power exists in the form of a family

3 30 Years’ War (1618-1648) Fought mostly in German States
Began as a religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants, but turned into a power struggle within Germany Eventually developed into a general conflict involving most European powers-Denmark, Sweden, and France Ended as a power struggle between France and the Hapsburgs

4 French Fear France (and other nations) are afraid of the Hapsburgs getting too powerful The French hope to keep the Hapsburg family weak and divided- then France is the most powerful in Europe!

5 Peace of Westphalia Ends Thirty Years’ War
Europe is divided into Catholic and Protestant territories The Hapsburgs begin to create a large new empire in eastern and southeastern Europe.

6 Absolute Leadership in Austria
Maria Theresa inherits throne of Austria

7 Girls Can’t Rule 1. Her throne did not come easy. Austria was worried that the rest of the German states would not accept female leadership. 2. Pragmatic Sanction- agreement between European rulers not to divide Hapsburg lands and to accept female succession to the Austrian throne. 3. A little war breaks out (War of Austrian Succession), but Austria wins!

9 7 Years’ War 1. Began when Prussia and Austria fought over control of Germany in order to gain supreme rule in Europe

Prussia and Britain won!! France lost most of its colonial possessions in N. America as a result of the Treaty of Paris in 1763 Prussia became a great European power Great Britain strengthened its hold on territories in N. America and India
