Cellular Respiration
2
What is respiration?
3
What is respiration? When we breathe oxygen into our lungs and release carbon dioxide. CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) Oxygen
4
Where does the Oxygen go?
5
Where does the Oxygen go?
Oxygen diffuses into the blood.
6
Where does the Oxygen go?
Oxygen diffuses into the blood. Blood travels around the body.
7
Where does the Oxygen go?
Oxygen diffuses into the blood. Blood travels around the body. Oxygen diffuses into the cells.
8
Plants also respire! They take in oxygen and “breathe” out CO2
9
What happens in the cell?
Food and oxygen combine to form energy. Sugar + Oxygen ENERGY + Carbon Dioxide + Water + + +
10
What happens in the cell?
Food and oxygen combine to form energy. Sugar + Oxygen ENERGY + Carbon Dioxide + Water C6H12O O2 ATP CO H2O + + +
11
Where does cellular respiration happen in the Cell?
Cellular respiration happens inside the mitochondria in the cell.
12
Respiration in the Cells
Cellular respiration - when our cells use oxygen to break apart sugar in order to release energy (ATP). It is the opposite reaction of Photosynthesis (Photosynthesis backwards is Cellular Respiration!)
13
Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration
Sunlight + carbon dioxide + water sugar (food) + oxygen _______ + _______ + _______ _______ + _______ Cellular Respiration Sugar (food) + oxygen energy + carbon dioxide + water _______ + _______ _______ + _______ + _____
14
Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration Same!!!
Sunlight + carbon dioxide + water sugar (food) + oxygen Energy CO H2O Glucose + O2 Cellular Respiration Sugar (food) + oxygen energy + carbon dioxide + water Glucose O ATP CO H20

16
ATP and Sunlight are just different forms of Energy
Photosynthesis Sunlight + carbon dioxide + water sugar (food) + oxygen Energy CO H2O Glucose + O2 Cellular Respiration Sugar (food) + oxygen energy + carbon dioxide + water Glucose O ATP CO H20 Same!!! ATP and Sunlight are just different forms of Energy
17
Do plant cells do cellular respiration too?
YES!! Why? Plants produce glucose (energy storing sugar) through photosynthesis, but they still need to make that sugar usable for the cell. They use the process of cellular respiration to make usable energy (ATP) for the cell. This process also happens in the mitochondria of the plant cells.
