Why do people choose to support one type of charity over another? Discuss these questions with your partner and be prepared to feed back your ideas.

Which of these three types of charity do you think is most worthy of your support? Rank them in order, from 1 to 3. Be prepared to explain your reasons.

Research Working in pairs, you have 30 minutes to research the work carried out by The Salvation Army. You must describe in as much detail as you can what this charity does. Try to list reasons why the charity’s work is important to society and why it deserves support and donations. Here are some useful links to help you: Extension: Gather information that might help to persuade someone that the work of this charity is more important than the work of other charities. Can you find any facts or statistics to back up your claims?

Discussion Have your ideas about the importance of different types of charity changed since you carried out your research and listened to the presentations? What factors should people consider when choosing a charity to support? Why do people choose certain charities over others? How can you support a charity?

How can you support The Salvation Army?
Consider what you have found out about the work of The Salvation Army. Are there any ways in which you could help? What is the ‘Recycle with Michael’ scheme? Spend a few minutes with your partner researching this further if necessary, then design a poster, leaflet or other media of your choice to promote the scheme within our school and community.
