2. Important Terms
A term is an algebraic expression written with numbers, variables, or both, and using multiplication, division, or both. A term that has no variables is often called a constant. 5,x,cd,6mx, are all terms. Of these, 5 is a constant.
The coefficient of a term is a numerical part of the term. If no coefficient is written, then it is understood to be 1. The coefficient of 6mx is 6, the coefficient of is , and the coefficient of cd is 1.
For any given term, other terms that divide evenly into that given term are called factors. The numbers 4 and 5 are factors of 20. The number 2 and x are a factor of 2x.
Side Note: One can think of a term with an addition or subtraction sign in the front of the coefficient. For example, in 3-x, the two terms are 3 and –x. The coefficient of x is -1.

3. Important Terms
An algebraic expression is an expression with numbers and variables connected by at least one operation (+, -, x, ÷).
Variables are symbols for numbers that are unknown (i.e. x, y, a, b, n, etc.) In the example above, a and y are both variables.
A verbal expression is an expression with numbers and variables connected by at least one operation (+, -, x, ÷) using words.
