Monday Afternoon (act 3 Scene 1)
Benvolio and Mercutio are hanging out as usual, trading insults and mocking the Capulets. Nothing better to do than make fun of the people who hate you. Tybalt shows up, who is trying to find Romeo so he can get back at him for crashing the Capulet party. Didn’t wait around did he? Let’s see, last night he caught Romeo, this morning the letter, and now he’s on the hunt. Sheesh.
13
Monday Afternoon (act 3 Scene 1)
Tybalt provokes Mercutio by making fun of Romeo. Mercutio responds, and makes fun of Tybalt Benvolio, who wants everyone to be friends, warns the guys not to fight in public. And then in stroll the just-married Romeo. Insults are exchanged, but Romeo remembers that Tybalt is his new wife's cousin, so he turns the other cheek.
14
Monday Afternoon (act 3 Scene 1)
Mercutio finds this totally shocking—actually dishonorable— so he offers to fight Tybalt instead. So they fight. Quite literary, the text says “they fight”. All the imagination for the fight scene must happen in your head (as a reader) and performed on stage. Romeo tries to intervene and stop it, but Tybalt then stabs Mercutio under Romeo’s arm!!!!
15
Monday Afternoon (act 3 Scene 1)
Romeo and Benvolio assume that Mercutio hasn't been badly hurt because he starts joking about his wound— but it's no joke. He's dying. He then gives us the famous line, "A plague on both your houses," and then turns to BFF Romeo and says, "Why the devil came you between us? I was hurt under your arm," he says. A minute later, he is dead. Romeo blames himself for Mercutio's death and laments that his love for "sweet Juliet" "hath made [him] effeminate" [a girly wimp]. So, he decides to man up. By challenging Tybalt to a duel. … what will happen next???

Monday Afternoon (act 3 Scene 1)
After Tybalt kills Romeo’s best friend, Romeo goes after Tybalt with a vengeance. He manages to kill Tybalt. #slaybrother Wait… he just killed his cousin… b/c like, he just married Juliet… like a few hours ago… woops #mybad #revenge Romeo stands in disbelief of what he’s done #facepalm Benvolio forces him to run away before the prince comes and tries to kill Romeo News spreads fast in Verona… Romeo’s parents learn of Mercutio’s death, and Juliet’s parents learn of Tybalt’s death. They go to the prince for help.

Monday Afternoon (act 3 Scene 1) (yes, it’s still Monday… a lot can happen on a Monday)
Prince is furious that his family member (Mercutio) has been killed However, the Capulet’s demand that Romeo should be killed for killing Tybalt Prince says “a life for a life” Since Romeo did what the law would have done, Romeo has been banished. Yeah… so banishment not so horrible today, but back then, like you weren’t allowed to ever come back to the city. Everything Romeo knew ($$$, house, babes, friends) all was in Verona. He now will be homeless, shunned, and won’t be able to be with his new wifey.
