Figure 1 Chewing and Tissue Damage Results in the Accumulation of Th17 Cells in the Gingiva The gingiva, forming the soft tissue surrounding the teeth, contain populations of lymphocytes. Young mice and humans have limited numbers of T cells producing IL-17 (Th17) and IFN-γ (Th1) in the gingiva (left). Dutzan et al. (2017) show that over time, mechanical stress from mastication and tissue damage results in the secretion of IL-6 from epithelial cells, which, via binding to IL-6Ra-gp130, facilitates the accumulation of Th17 cells via increased proliferation (right).
