6 Year Slave population Take one minute to quietly analyze this chart. Then answer the following question. According to this chart, what happened to slavery from in the United States? Explain your answer.

7 Slave population in the Americas:
It is important to remember that the slave population during this time in every other portion of the world was going down. The reason for this is not racism, but money.

8 Tobacco As we know, tobacco was the crop which helped the Jamestown settlers sustain a community in the 17th century. Over time, growing tobacco is terrible for land. The soil becomes less and less rich. Southern states noticed this and began growing cotton as they moved south and west.

9 Eli Whitney Letter

10 Eli Whitney Born and grew up in Massachusetts. Went to Yale.
Invented the Cotton Gin and “interchangeable” parts.

11 Interchangeable Parts
Kind of a big deal. Think about how much faster we can make things if all the parts are the same.

12 The cotton gin - for better or for worse.

13 Story of Us, “Cotton Gin” 4 Mins

14 Homemade cotton gin.

15 Eli Whitney Obit According to THIS letter, how did the production of the cotton gin affect slavery in the United States?

16 Growth of regional US slave populations over time.

17 The US economy grows in the 1800s
The US economy grows in the 1800s. Cotton is a huge part of that - helping factories in the North, planters in the South and shipping to factories in Britain.

18 “King Cotton” Because cotton became such a large part of the US economy, the phrase “King Cotton” became part of the American lexicon. “Cotton is King” by David Christy becomes a famous book written in arguing FOR slavery in the South.

19 “King Cotton” “You dare not make war upon cotton! No power on earth dares make war upon it. Cotton is king.” -James H. Hammond, Senator, South Carolina, March of 1858

20 Please forgive the Florida-Georgia Line music. Yikes.
Also, the spelling is weird b/c it is Australian. Technology influenced the growth of slavery, but it is my contention that it would have ended it as well…. eventually.
