NOTETAKING Wilder
2
FIRST STEP Find your fact. Then decide whether you are going to DIRECT QUOTE, PARAPHRASE, or BULLET
3
DIRECT QUOTES When you quote a fact, you must write down EXACTLY what the source says. Example: “Barack Obama was born on August 4th, 1961 in Hawaii to a father from Kenya and a mother from Kentucky.”
4
Paraphrasing Paraphrasing is often defined as putting a passage from an author into “your own words. When you paraphrase you are coming up with your own full sentence. The current President of the United States was born in Hawaii. His father was born in Kenya and his mother was born in Kentucky.
5
Bullets A bullet is a quick fact, and you use as few words as possible. Example: -BOB 8/4/61 Place- Hawaii
6
Citation NO MATTER which way you choose to note you fact, you MUST show where you got your information by giving the author’s last name and then page number you found the information on. - Example: (Shuman 5). If there are two authors, put the authors in alphabetical order by last name - Example: (Shuman, Williams 5).
7
What if there is no author?
If there is no author you will give credit to the source. Example- ( If there is no page number you will leave that blank.
