1 Notes #3: Electron Configuration
GET OUT YOUR “GOOD” PERIODIC TABLE!!! Notes #3: Electron Configuration WCHS Chemistry

2 Have you labeled your “good” Periodic Table?

3 Electron Configuration
= shorthand notation to show how many e- are in each orbital Ex: He = 1s2 See a PATTERN! There are exceptions, but we don’t worry about them There are s, p, and d blocks The period tells you the energy level

4

5 s p d 3d 4d f

6 Always default to the longhand version!
You may use these only if told to. Always default to the longhand version! ONLY USED SOMETIMES. WILL TEST FULL LENGTH! SHORTHAND Noble Gas Configuration - Write last full energy level [Noble gas] and then continue on after that Examples: F = Sr = [He]2s22p5 [Kr]5s2

7 Always default to the longhand version!
You may use these only if told to. Always default to the longhand version! EVEN SHORTER HAND! Just write the last number Examples: Ca = Ni = Br = 4s2 3d8 4p5

8 cont... You can also identify an element by its shorthand notation!
Examples: 2p3 = 5p5 = 4d2 = N I Zr
