Hi, I’m [NAME] and I just wanted to take a couple of minutes of your time to tell you about the British Council’s Language Assistant programme. The programme provides undergraduates and graduates with paid English teaching placements abroad – you can apply to work all over Europe, but there are also placements available further afield in South America, China and Quebec in Canada. Placements are mostly for a year but there are some six month positions available as well. Although you need a certain level of language skills for most placements, there are no prior language skills required for China and Spain.

If you were not a Language Assistant (Personalise as needed) Working abroad is a great … and for many … life changing experience. Working as a Language Assistant is an amazing way to explore a new country and culture, improve your language skills and build a network of international friends and colleagues.

Whether you’re interested in a career in teaching or not, the programme is a great thing to have on your CV and you develop a lot of transferable skills along the way, like communication and presentation skills. Teaching hours are also light, between 12 and 20 hours a week, so you have plenty of time to pursue different hobbies, work experience, and, of course, travel.
