Colon tumors contain a small population of CSCs capable of self-renewal that are present in primary tumors (long-term tumor initiating cells, or LT-TICs) or show up only in subsequent transplants (delayed-contributing tumor initiating cells, or DC-TICs). Tumor transient-amplifying cells (T-TACs) generate the majority of cells in primary tumors, whereas the bulk of nontumorigenic cancer cells contribute little to tumor growth.
