Figure 1 Well-Characterized RNA Sponges in Bacteria
RNA sponges were recently discovered to control sugar utilization (Figueroa-Bossi et al., 2009; Overgaard et al., 2009) and amino acid metabolism (Miyakoshi et al., 2015). The right hand panel illustrates the tRNA-precursor-derived RNA sponge described by Lalaouna et al. in this issue. The figure summarizes the respective location of the RNA sponges, their regulated sRNAs, as well as the target regulons controlled by the sponge mechanism.
