1 Bellwork: Thurs/Fri. April. 6/7, 2017
1. Name some places that probably have a lot of bacteria on or in them:___________ ___________________________________________________________________ 2. Name some places you might “think” have a lot of bacteria on them but ACTUALLY don’t have much bacteria on them: (and mention why)_______________________ __________________________________________________________________ 3. Do you think everything “growing” on your Petri dishes is bacteria?(why or why not?) _________ What else could be growing on your Petri dishes?_____________ (the rest of the questions from the video….) Can bacteria change your personality?______ How many pounds of bacteria do we have on us (at any given time)? _____________ 6. How similar are our microbiomes?_________________________ 7. How would you name ….. This

2 Bacteria can be Found Everywhere

3

4 Objectives: to take bacterial swabs from places around Ironwood Ridge.
to inoculate (swab) Petri dish with bacterial culture and monitor growth to count bacterial colonies to find out where bacteria are the most numerous to determine what kind of environmental conditions influence bacterial growth

5 Materials: 1 Petri dish with agar per group (of 3) cotton Q-tips
Masking Tape (parafilm)  Grease pencil (sharpie)  Incubator

6 Bottom of the Petri dish!!!!

7 Procedure: I’ll divide the divide the dish into 4 equal parts with a sharpie & number 1-4. Write your groups’ initials and period on a tiny piece of masking tape and stick to your Petri dish (DO NOT OPEN IT YET!)

you will contaminate your sample

24 Make sure your Petri dish is sealed with parafilm, labeled with masking tape and is upside down in the incubator

25 Bellwork: Mon. April 10, 2017 The 3 basic bacterial shapes are: _________(coccus)______ (baccillus) and __________(spirillum) 3 basic arrangement prefixes = (and what they mean) ___________________ = __________________

26 Bacteria Are Everywhere Part II
Today you will observe the bacteria growth in your Petri dish quadrants, measure and count the colonies and answer the discussion questions. IMPORTANT: DO NOT REMOVE THE LIDS!!! (You could have pathogenic, or disease causing bacteria, in your Petri dishes!!!

27 We are trying to find the most bacteria infested place on the Ironwood Ridge Campus and why… But really… Why are bacteria everywhere? Do we need them?

28

29 -----------STOP---------------------
Hypothesis: Where do you think you will find the highest amount of bacteria? What do you think the Petri dish will look like in 2-3 days? STOP

36 On the top ½ of the back of your paper write:
Conclusion: (Was your hypothesis supported?) (Where is the worst place for bacteria on Campus?) (… and why are bacteria around anyway? Think about: “We are 90-99% DNA” (from TED TALK) Where do bread, yogurt and cheese come from? How many of the 3 Domains on Earth are bacterial (prokaryotic)? What about decomposition…. Think about everything you have learned – Are bacteria mostly good? Bad? Both?
