1 Rewards and Consequences
Ephesians – part 10 Rewards and Consequences

2 Ephesians 6 4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

3 Rewards vs Consequences
Proverbs 20:11 "Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right."

4 Continued Change is created differently through consequences and rewards Consequences create divides often in the parent-child relationship Rewards cause unification in the relationship

5 Defining good rewards or consequences
Exodus 22:1-4 “If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and kills it or sells it, he shall repay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. If a thief is found breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no bloodguilt for him, but if the sun has risen on him, there shall be bloodguilt for him. He shall surely pay. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. If the stolen beast is found alive in his possession, whether it is an ox or a donkey or a sheep, he shall pay double.

6 Continued Understand what the parent controls
Knowing the severity of the consequence Understanding the frequency and time frame of the consequence Making sure the child is not able to influence you or the consequence Understanding the reaction the child has after the boundary is set.

7 How to deliver or prompt the consequence
How many times to ask before setting the consequence Making sure that your words carry weight Processing with the child after the consequence has been delivered.

8 Matthew 5 43 “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.

9 Psalm 103 8 The Lord is compassionate and merciful,     slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. 9 He will not constantly accuse us,     nor remain angry forever. 10 He does not punish us for all our sins;     he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. 11 For his unfailing love toward those who fear him     is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.

10 Psalm 103 12 He has removed our sins as far from us     as the east is from the west. 13 The Lord is like a father to his children,     tender and compassionate to those who fear him. 14 For he knows how weak we are;     he remembers we are only dust. 15 Our days on earth are like grass;     like wildflowers, we bloom and die. 16 The wind blows, and we are gone—     as though we had never been here. 17 But the love of the Lord remains forever     with those who fear him.

11 Isaiah 43 22 “But, dear family of Jacob, you refuse to ask for my help. You have grown tired of me, O Israel! 23 You have not brought me sheep or goats for burnt offerings. You have not honored me with sacrifices, though I have not burdened and wearied you with requests for grain offerings and frankincense. 24 You have not brought me fragrant calamus or pleased me with the fat from sacrifices. Instead, you have burdened me with your sins and wearied me with your faults. 25 “I—yes, I alone—will blot out your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again.

12 Hebrews 8 10 But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day,[c] says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 11 And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the Lord.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already. 12 And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.”

13 “Forget about it”

14 James 1 17 Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.
