2 What is Geography? -Geography- the study of people, their environments, and their resources. -Geography deals with land and water, but it also deals with Earth’s life forms, including humans. -Geographers use FIVE themes to study and classify all parts of the earth. These five themes are…

4 Movement -Of the five themes, movement has affected our history most.
-For thousands of years, people migrated to the Americas bringing new goods, ideas, and even disease. -What are some examples of movement in history? Movement- the movement of people, goods, and ideas.

5 Region -A region is an area with certain unifying characteristics (it has certain things in common) - Regions might have similar climates and landforms -Regions also might have cultural similarities

6 Human/Environmental Interaction
-Whether it is cutting down forests, hunting wildlife, or growing crops, people have always affected the environment -As a part of geography, it is important to study how people have impacted their environment

7 Location Geographers break down location into two categories:
1. Absolute location 2. Relative location

8 Location (cont.) -An absolute location is the exact location of a place on the earth. -Geographers pinpoint absolute location by using lines of latitude and longitude.

9 Location (cont.) -A relative location is location in relation to another place. -For example, relative location for the United States is south of Canada and north of Mexico.

10 Place -A place is made up of physical characteristics and human characteristics. -Physical characteristics include climate, animal life, and bodies of water -Human characteristics include languages, religions, jobs, and even modes of transportation
