1 Mr. Standifer Earth Science
Rock Types Lesson Mr. Standifer Earth Science

2 Content Objectives Students will be able to create a graphic organizer (foldable) illustrating and describing three rock types (igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary.) Students will be able to identify three rock types (igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary.) Students will be able to distinguish between weathering, erosion, and deposition.

3 Language Objectives Students will be able to verbally define igneous rock, sedimentary rock, metamorphic rock, weathering, erosion, and deposition.

4 Key Vocabulary Weathering Erosion Deposition Igneous Rock
Sedimentary Rock Metamorphic Rock

5 The Rock Cycle The Rock Cycle The rock cycle shows the three types of rock— igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary—and the processes that form them.

6 Igneous Rocks Igneous rocks are formed by cooling and hardening of hot liquid rock.

7 Metamorphic Rocks Metamorphic rocks are formed when rocks are changed by heat and pressure.

8 Sedimentary Rocks Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediments (small rock pieces) are pressed together and cemented (glued) together.

9 Open your treat! What is in a Rice Krispy Treat?
If this were a sedimentary rock, what would the rice krispies respresent? What would the marshmallow crème represent?

11 Weathering Weathering happens when rocks are broken down into smaller fragments.

12 Erosion Erosion is when rock fragments are moved by some force of nature.
