General pathway of starch biosynthesis beginning with Suc as the product of photosynthesis. Activities are as follows. 1, Suc synthase; 2, UDP-Glc pyrophosphorylase; 3, glycolytic enzymes including phosphoglucomutase; 4, ADPGlc pyrophosphorylase; 5, hexose phosphate transporters; 6, ADPGlc transporters. Not all plants possess both the indicated transporters and cytosolic ADPGlc pyrophosphorylase. Transport of Glc-1-P is depicted as a possible example and is not meant to imply that hexose phosphate transporters are necessarily specific for this molecule. Ap, Amylopectin; Am, amylose.
