Chemical equations Words or formulas? Both can mean the same, but need for specificity exists! Symbols  read as yields Parenthetical symbols for states of reactants and products Delta over arrow means heat added Symbol/s over arrow mean catalysts Coefficients: numbers added to indicate mole ratios for balancing eqns.

4 Reactions in aqueous solution
Reality check: most reactions occur in solutions…our world is largely aqueous! Complete/total ionic equation: all ions present in the ionic compounds of both reactants and products Spectator ions: those not involved in the formation of a product (typically a precipitate…insoluble) Net ionic equation: this involves only those ions which form a product or precipitate in a reaction Realization: water can be the product formed! How to predict formation of a product? SOLUBILITY RULES!
