Describing Chemical Reactions
Chemical equations Words or formulas? Both can mean the same, but need for specificity exists! Symbols read as yields Parenthetical symbols for states of reactants and products Delta over arrow means heat added Symbol/s over arrow mean catalysts Coefficients: numbers added to indicate mole ratios for balancing eqns.

Reactions in aqueous solution
Reality check: most reactions occur in solutions…our world is largely aqueous! Complete/total ionic equation: all ions present in the ionic compounds of both reactants and products Spectator ions: those not involved in the formation of a product (typically a precipitate…insoluble) Net ionic equation: this involves only those ions which form a product or precipitate in a reaction Realization: water can be the product formed! How to predict formation of a product? SOLUBILITY RULES!
