Where can science take me??
2
The Scientific Method: Problem solving procedure used by scientists (All of us!) The steps include:
1. Identify the Problem EX. – Joe and my feet are burning while walking barefoot down the street on a sunny day. 2. Gather information: Data from books, others experience, reports, etc. EX. - Dark colors absorb sun; Grass is cooler than blacktop 3. Suggest a hypothesis (educated guess): Prediction that can be tested EX. – I believe walking on the grass will be cooler than walking on blacktop. 4. Design an Experiment to test your hypothesis. Must include a variable and controls. Variable – factor being tested (the change!) Control – Parts that stay the same (doesn’t change!) EX. – Independent Variable – I walk on the grass Dependent variable – How your feet feel Controls – Joe stays on the street; still sunny; no footwear still; etc.

Do you use the scientific method everyday???
5. Record information (Data): Charts, tables, graphs. Record the results!! 6. Conclusion: Look at the results and see if your hypothesis was correct. Do you use the scientific method everyday??? Do babies?? Theory vs. Law Theory: An explanation of things based on many observations that do not disprove your explanation. Law: A proven theory; Very few of these in nature Can my hypothesis ever be a law?? Why or why not??

Measurement Tools in Science
1. Measurement tool: Metric ruler Used for: Measuring distance SI unit: meter (m) We often use centimeter or millimeter. 2. Measurement tool: Graduated cylinder Used for: Measuring Volume (amount of space something occupies) SI unit: Liter (l) **Meniscus**: Downward curve of liquid that gets measured

SI Unit = Systeme International D’unites or Metric system!!
3. Measuring tool: Triple beam balance Used for: Measuring mass (not weight) SI unit: Kilogram (Heard of gram or milligram??) 4. Measuring tool: Thermometer Used for: Measuring temperature SI unit: Degree Celsius **Important temperatures: a. Body temp. 37 Degrees Celsius b. Boiling point of water 100 Degrees Celsius c. Freezing point of water 0 Degrees Celsius 5. Measuring tool: Stopwatch or clock Used for: Measuring time SI unit: Second (s) SI Unit = Systeme International D’unites or Metric system!!
