3 Question Type: True/False/Not Given
What is it? The exam paper has statements (sentences). You compare the sentences to the passage and decide if the information in the statements is True (T), False (F) or Not Given (NG) in the text. Strategy and underline the main ideas and words on the exam question. Scan the reading passage for those main ideas / words and then read carefully. Compare information in text with the statement. Decide if the statement has the exact meaning as in the reading passage. Tips The reading passage and test sentences usually use different words, but some words, names and numbers may be the same. There is always at least one of each answer (TRUE, FALSE, NOT GIVEN) in each set of questions. The answers come from the text, not what you already know or assume.

4 Practice TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN Statements Recall the strategy: 1) Underline the main words in each statement. 2) Read the passage quickly and underline the same information. 3) Choose your answer: TRUE, FALSE or NOT GIVEN. When you enter a Waldorf school, the first thing you may notice is the care given to the building. The walls are usually painted in lively colors and are decorated with student artwork. Student activity can be seen everywhere and all desks hold a special main lesson book. Teachers in Waldorf schools are dedicated to creating an inner enthusiasm for learning within every child. They achieve this in a variety of ways. Even seemingly boring and academic subjects are presented with pictures and in an interesting way. This removes the need for competitive testing, putting students in levels, and rewarding good behavior to encourage learning. It allows motivation to begin from within the student and causes joyful, lifelong learning. The Waldorf curriculum is wide and all- inclusive and structured around the three developmental phases of childhood: from birth to approximately 6 or 7 years, from 7 to 14 years and from 14 to 18 years. Rudolf Steiner explained to teachers that the best way to provide useful support for the child is to understand these phases fully and to bring "age appropriate" content to the children 1 A The inside of the school is colorful and examples of student work can be seen. B People notice the inside of the school appears boring and student work is absent. C On the inside of the school wooden floors with brick walls can be seen throughout. 2 A Teachers use a single method to make students eager to learn. B One teacher used twenty different methods to help a student understand. C There are many different methods for teachers to encourage students to learn. 3 A The Waldorf school began by giving awards to students but later stopped this practice. B The teacher gives tests and rewards to inspire students to learn. C Tests and rewards for learning are not needed at Waldorf schools. 4 A Steiner said teachers should only understand the development phase of their student’s age. B Steiner said that material should be related to their student’s age. C Steiner learned about the three developmental stages while studying in university.

This type of test item checks if you can understand main ideas What does it look like? On the test is the first half of a sentence. You choose the correct answer from a list. Strategy underline the words on the exam paper. Scan for the ideas / words in the text Focus on this part of text carefully and choose the answer. Tips There are more endings than sentence stems, so you will not use them all. The wording is different in the reading passage. Sentence beginnings always appear first in the text, followed by the ending. Sentence beginnings are in the same order as the reading passage. Linking words (although, even though, in spite of) can be very important to the meaning of the sentence.
