Science National Honor Society (SNHS)

Requirements To be eligible for membership, you must:
Be a current sophomore, junior or senior Be currently enrolled in a science class Sophomores must be currently enrolled in an AP science class Juniors must have been enrolled in one honors science class before or in eleventh grade Seniors must have been enrolled in two honors classes before or in twelfth grade Maintain a 3.00/4.00 GPA across all classes, and a 3.00/4.00 science GPA Attend at least four general meetings annually and at least one officer’s lecture Participate in at least one chapter project Complete at least four hours of science related service per school year Examples include being a tutor for any science subject, volunteering at a nursing home, volunteering at a hospital, helping a science teacher, etc. Pay the membership dues by designated date

Requirements The following actions could result in a member being placed on probation or removal from the honor society: A breach of the Allen High School honor code or student handbook or failure to uphold behavioral standards representative of AHS and SNHS could result in removal from the society If a member’s cumulative and/or science GPA drops below a 3.00/4.00, they will be placed on probation for one grading period during which they have the opportunity to correct the issue. Failure to do so will result in a removal from the society. Failure to complete at least 4 hours of science-related service per school year and to attend at least 4 general meetings will result in removal from the honor society

Membership Membership in SNHS will begin next year ( school year) Receiving information now to fill out application information and be accepted into SNHS for school year If interested in being an officer for the school year, must be a member in good standing (doesn’t take attending officer presentations or science service hours into consideration this year) Membership dues are $10.00

Sub-Committees and Projects
There are numerous fields of interest within science, and each field has its own respective applications. In order to organize chapter projects which are of interest to and grant a voice to all members, subcommittees may be created. Each subcommittee will organize and conduct its own community project related to science. Current Ideas for Subcommittees: Science Tutoring Healthcare involvement Science Education Animal Care and Environmental involvement Science Journal

Officers Officer elections will occur in April, and they will be effective in the school year To run for office, you must be a member in good standing (paid dues, active in service, attending meetings) Officers must hold board meetings during which they plan the agenda for general meetings and seek opportunities to contribute to the community All officers must present a minimum of two brief (10-15 minutes) scientific lectures annually

President Responsibilities of the President include:
Preside over all meetings Organize both board and chapter meetings Work with the other officers to organize the chapter projects and reach out to local professionals in the science field. Head one of the sub-committees

Vice President Responsibilities of the Vice President include:
Assume president’s role in his/her absence Responsible for scheduling officer presentations Work with the other officers to organize the chapter projects Head one of the sub-committees

Treasurer Responsibilities of the Treasurer include:
Receive and distribute all funds Keep an accurate account of the receipts and disbursements in accordance with school regulations Work with the other officers to organize the chapter projects Head one of the sub-committees

Secretary Responsibilities of the Secretary include:
Keep the minutes of the meeting, a record of all business and all records on file Record the number of events each member has completed Immediately following an election, the secretary must also submit to the national secretary of the Science National Honor Society a list of the names of those elected to membership Work with the other officers to organize the chapter project Head one of the sub-committees

Public Relations Officer
Responsibilities of the Public Relations Officer include: Publicizing the events of the chapter Keeping members informed of chapter events Work with the other officers to organize the chapter project Head one of the sub-committees

Membership Application
Application can be on the Science National Honor Society Website. Application link: Application is due 4/13/2018 at 4:00 pm. Dues must also be paid by this time. Turn in dues to Mrs. Sweaks in room K213 If interested in being an officer, there is a separate application which can also be found on the website. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION IN ADDITION TO THE OFFICER APPLICATION Your officer application will be considered as long as you are a member in good standing. Application link:
