Starter #1: What do these items all have in common?
Let’s play detective. I’m going to “show” you four different items. Your job is to figure out what those items all have in common. Envision these: magazine, newspaper, biography book, web article. What do these items all have in common? All these items are designed to provide information to readers. Today we will begin a new unit in Literature: “Informational Reading.” What is informational reading? Some informational reading is factual—no one could dispute the accuracy of the information. Other informational reading is open for debate: It may or may not be reliable in presenting the facts. That information is based on opinion. Can you give me examples of informational reading? (Let’s do this w/ popcorn responses )

Starter #2: In looking at informational reading, we could organize that genre lots of different ways, but for our purposes, I’d like to suggest these four categories and they are all based on the author’s purpose. Here are four main purposes for informational writing: To Persuade Editorials, ads, commercials, campaign speeches To Inform Newspapers, magazines, books To Entertain True stories (personal narratives), essays To Instruct “How to” articles and books, recipes

Starter #3: Can you guess the most important question is in informational reading? It is: “What is the author’s purpose?” Why is that such a crucial question? It helps you evaluate the validity (accuracy/truthfulness) of what you are reading. Let’s begin our Informational Reading Unit with these two sources: * Coach #10 Author’s Purpose * Discovery Ed video on Informational Texts (“Kinds of Reading”)
