1 RTI: Response to Intervention
Questions Answered

2 What is the difference between RTI and the discrepancy model already in place?
The discrepancy model requires chronic failure before support services can be offered and does not consider all of the outside causes of academic failure RTI offers data driven information on a wider scale, considering academic as well as social and emotional factors the limit achievement 2/23/2019

3 A Matter of Time The time it takes to evaluate a child depends on the type of service needed Physical Therapy is a direct CSE referral. OT, speech and counseling may only require one IST meeting. Academic referrals require that data be collected to support a referral to CSE. Remember…the goal of RtI is to provide strategies to support struggling students… Not Special Education classification 2/23/2019

4 Is there a database of strategies to help teachers?
All IST teams have an effective strategies book. Ask you building administration or IST member. Building principals will be surveying their staffs for best practices that will be compiled into a reference binder later this fall. 2/23/2019

5 What is the difference between RTI and IST?
RTI (Response to Intervention) is a multi-tiered problem-solving approach that identifies struggling students and provides them with applied strategies. IST (Instructional Support Team) is the vehicle used to investigate the reasons why a student is struggling and to devise strategies to improve achievement. 2/23/2019

6 Is there a limit to the number of students involved in the process?
There is no limit to how many students can be referred. As teachers become aware of more strategies and develop the own “bag of tricks”, referrals to IST should decrease. 2/23/2019

7 How will parents be involved in the RTI process?
Parents are an important part of the process for all students – elementary and secondary. They should be encouraged to be a part of the process. 2/23/2019

8 When in doubt, who do I contact about a struggling student?
There are many resources available to you in your building to assist in determining if you should refer a student to IST: IST members, veteran teachers, team leaders, guidance counselors, SAC’s, psychologists and building administration 2/23/2019

9 Will the district be implementing standard procedures so that all buildings are implementing RTI in the same manner? Yes, building and district administration are working with the IST teams to establish clear procedures for both IST and CSE referrals. 2/23/2019
