Today we will close read a firsthand account. Remember our goal for close reading is to pay careful attention to the text, rereading and continuing to think about it deeply. We will chunk this longer text to help us understand it piece by piece. Follow along as I read the first 5 paragraphs.

Reread the first paragraph to yourself. What is this paragraph mostly about? (write your answer in the margin) Repeat this same process for Paragraphs 2-5: Reread Annotate for gist

Remember: Annotating is reading and marking text for a specific purpose. Now we will annotate our text for vocabulary that is related to Human Rights and the UDHR. Listen as I model paragraph 1. Complete paragraphs 2-5 with a partner.
