2. Sequence the events of the story.
Sam had to show he was responsible enough to get the dog he wanted.
Sam did a lot of things to prove he is responsible, so he got Dodger on his ninth birthday.
Dodger did a lot of naughty things and Sam said, “Bad dog, Dodger,”
After Dodger pulled down the curtains, Sam’s mom said the dog has to live outside.
Dodger followed Sam to school and made more trouble there.
Dodger went to Sam’s baseball game and made trouble there.
Sam’s mom said Dodger needed a new home where he would get more attention.
Sam began to train Dodger.
Dodger followed Sam to the baseball game and was a good dog.

3. Use the SWBST method to retell the story.
Somebody: Sam
Wanted: WANTED a dog
But: BUT when Sam got his dog, the dog behaved badly and caused many problems. Sam’s mother decided to get rid of the dog.
So: SO Sam decided to spend time with Dodger to train his dog.
Then: THEN the dog knew how to behave and the family could keep him!

4. Plot… a different way of looking at it
Beginning:
Sam got a dog.
Rising Action:
The dog was not behaving.
Climax:
The dog behaved so badly that mom decided to get rid of him.
Falling Action:
Sam began to train his dog.
Resolution:
The dog learned how to behave and the family kept him.

5. Our Phonics Pattern of the Week: Suffixes
Suffixes are added to the ends of words to change the meaning of words.
Ly at the end of a word usually tells HOW a word is done. Example: slow + ly… How did she run? She ran SLOWLY.
Ful at the end of the word means full of (whatever the word is). Example: cheerful = FULL of CHEER
Or and er usually mean “a person who” so teach+er = a person who teaches and sail+or = a person who sails.
