Home & Work Ephesians 6:1-9

Ephesians 6:1-9 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), that it may be well with you, and that you may live long

Ephesians 6:1-9 on the earth. And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger; but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Slaves, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the

Ephesians 6:1-9 flesh, with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ; not by way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.

Ephesians 6:1-9 With good will render service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good thing each one does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether slave or free.

Ephesians 6:1-9 And, masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.

A marriage that is built upon Jesus Christ provides the best environment for children to thrive.

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes ________ with a baby carriage.

Maybe not in today’s world!

It seems like many things are out of order or upside down.

In today’s world we often have yours, mine, and ours.

Nonetheless, the bible still says…

“Children, obey your parents in the lord, for this is right.”

A family should only have one set of rules.

Everybody in the family should obey the same set of rules.

To “Obey” in the greek

G5219 ὑπακούω hupakouō / hoop-ak-oo'-o to hear under (as a subordinate), that is, to listen attentively; by implication to heed or conform to a command or authority: hearken, be obedient to, obey.

In the Lord

For this is right

Ephesians 6:2-3 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.

To “honor” in the greek

G5091 τιμάω timaō / tim-ah'-o to prize, that is, fix a valuation upon; by implication to revere: honor, value.

The first commandment with a promise.

Paul is quoting one of the big ten.

Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.

What is the promise or the cause and effect?

When my parents train me to do what is righteous…

And I choose to honor them and obey them…

I have positioned myself for a long and blessed life.

But if I choose not to honor or obey them…

deuteronomy 21:18-21 If any man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father or his mother, and when they chastise him, he will not even listen to them, then his father and mother shall seize him, and bring

deuteronomy 21:18-21 him out to the elders of his city at the gateway of his hometown. They shall say to the elders of his city, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey us, he is a glutton and a drunkard.”

deuteronomy 21:18-21 Then all the men of the city shall stone him to death; so you shall remove the evil from your midst, and all Israel will hear of it and fear.

I may not live very long.

Back to Ephesians

Ephesians 6:4 And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger; but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Do not provoke your children to anger.

G3949 παροργίζω parorgizō / par-org-id'-zo to anger alongside, that is, enrage: - anger, provoke to wrath.

But bring them up

G1625 ἐκτρέφω ektrephō / ek-tref'-o to rear up to maturity, that is, (generally) to cherish or train: - bring up, nourish.

In the discipline

G3809 παιδεία paideia / pahee-di'-ah tutorage, that is, education or training; by implication disciplinary correction: - chastening, chastisement, instruction, nurture.

And instruction

G3559 νουθεσία nouthesia / noo-thes-ee'-ah calling attention to, that is, (by implication) mild rebuke or warning: - admonition.

Of the lord!

Be consistent

Mean what you say and do what you say.

Remember, there’s only one set of rules for the entire family.

God’s

As we go back to look at verses 5-9, god simply wants us to treat everybody the same.

Ephesians 6:5 Slaves, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ;

Most of this is self explanatory

But I found this phrase, “according to the flesh” very interesting.

He knows what we’re made of.

As much as we can physically.

As much as we can mentally.

As much as we can emotionally.

As much as we can spiritually.

Do your very best.

Work as if you’re working for Jesus Christ Himself.

Ephesians 6:6 not by way of eyeservice, as men- pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.

It’s not about looking busy

It’s about doing your best.

Ephesians 6:7-8 With good will render service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good thing each one does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether slave or free.

God sees everybody & everything.

Nothing sneaks by the king of kings & lord of lords.

Galatians 6:7-10 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows

Galatians 6:7-10 to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary. So then, while we have opportunity, let us do

Galatians 6:7-10 good to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.

God has established the principle of sowing and reaping.

You reap what you sow.

You reap later than you sow.

You reap more than you sow.

Does anybody want to reap corruption?

G5356 φθορά phthora / fthor-ah' decay, that is, ruin (spontaneous or inflicted, literally or figuratively): - corruption, destroy, perish.

Or would you rather sow in the spirit and reap eternal life?

Back to Ephesians

Ephesians 6:9 And, masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.

I love this phrase, “give up threatening.”

G547 ἀπειλή apeilē / ap-i-lay' a menace: - X straitly, threatening.

Stop being a menace to your employees.

Be a blessing!

God expects all of us to do our very best.

He wants us to treat others the way we would like to be treated.

Whether we are the parent or the child; the boss or the employee…

Do your very best as unto the lord!

Amen!
