2 The Era of Romanticism The largest artistic and philosophical movement of the late 1700s. Influenced by the American and French Revolutions during the time period. Romantics were involved politically and socially, but distanced themselves from the public at the same time. This was because they interpreted things through their emotions, so they were sometimes subject to oppression.

3 Poetic Techniques Odes were used by Romantic poets to convey their views and attitudes. Emphasized intuition and feeling over reason. Romantics were bold with their writing and did not restrain themselves. Used Myths and Symbolism. Attentive to Nature. The poem’s “speaker” was less of a persona, but a direct person of the poet; the Poet’s soul. Romantic poets valued: Individualism Freedom The natural world Human emotion and imagination Idealism

6 William Wordsworth (1770-1850)
Born in England and raised with 3 brothers and 1 sister. Studied at Cambridge. His visit to France and Switzerland during the french revolution formed his early political opinions and love for natural beauty. Believed poetry was a primary mode of expression, and spoken language was secondary.

8 Percy Bysshe Shelley Born on August 4th, 1792 at Horsham town, England
Shelley received his early education at home. Attended University College Oxford Married to a Novelist, Mary Shelley and had 3 children First publication was in 1810, Gothic Novel, “Zastrozzi.” Died on July 8th,1822 Shelley drowned in a sudden storm while sailing back from Livorno (Italy) to Lerici (Northern Italy)

10 Walt Whitman ( ) Born in Huntington, Long Island on May 31, 1819 with 9 siblings Named after father (Walter Whitman) but was nicknamed Walt to distinguish from his father Finished school then worked at Newspapers: Patriot at age 11, Star at age 12 At 16, moved to NYC only to move back due to the panic of 1837 1850 began first literary work Leaves of Grass Brother joined Civil War for the North, gave Whitman firsthand accounts Was appointed into government positions where his poetic peers gave him popularity Suffered stroke 1873 and died on March due to bronchial pneumonia
