Goal: Students should read 7.6 or more hours. That’s only 20 minutes a day! Students who achieve this goal will receive prizes! See Ms. Cook in the Learning Center for more information. Respect Responsibility Safety

3 Self Control What is self-control?
Self-control is the ability to control oneself, particularly one's emotions and desires or the expression of them in one's behavior, especially in difficult situations. Respect Responsibility Safety

4 Examples Self-control is the ability to override an impulse in order to respond appropriately. We use self-control when we eat carrots instead of Krispy Kreme donuts, When we forgive instead of “freak out” and When we pay attention instead of participating in distractions. 5 Thinking before you act. Controlling your temper. Making good choices.
What does self-control look like? Thinking before you act. Controlling your temper. Making good choices. Following through with plans and tasks. Behaving, even when no one is looking. Respect Responsibility Safety

6 What does self control do for us?
Self-control helps us manage motivational conflicts A motivational conflict is when motivations clash in ways that prevent action. People have many motivations, most of which benefit themselves and society. Respect Responsibility Safety

7 How can you demonstrate self-control at school?
Coming to class with everything needed to get to work rather than being unprepared Remembering and following directions rather than needing to be reminded
 Getting to work right away rather than procrastinating Paying attention rather than getting distracted Raising your hand and wait for your turn to speak Staying focused on your work Keeping your hands to yourself Walking quietly in the hallway Trying your best Respect Responsibility Safety

8 How can you demonstrate self-control socially/with others?
Remaining calm, even when criticized or otherwise provoked, rather than losing your temper Allowing others to speak rather than interrupting Being polite to all, even when stressed or angry Respect Responsibility Safety

11 Ways to implement self control when you are about to lose it.
1. Stop, take a breath and count to 10. 2. Think about how your body feels. 3. Think about your choices and their consequences: a. Walk away b. Use and “I” statement c. Get an adult to help 4. Decide on your best choice and do it! Respect Responsibility Safety
