Mrs. Paula Munts Pre AP English 10 Course Title Welcome to room 409 at Sparkman High School. I hope you are ready for a great school year. I am excited to get to know each of you and I’m really looking forward to our year together! This course addresses the early American experience ( ): the path of the American Dream, spurred on by the hope of individual freedom. lose study of political documents, speeches, sermons, journals, poetry, and early fiction. The course covers the Colonial writers, Revolutionary Period, Romanticism, Transcendentalism, and Realism. We will also incorporate connected writings and discern how they are connected to other literature. Language Arts Class Expectations: You will need: Be in class every day Be fully prepared Be polite no matter your mood Be ready to think when it’s tough Be able/willing to listen respectfully to other points of view Be willing to take risks Be ready to learn from failure Loose leaf college ruled paper Pens A composition notebook ½ sheet of poster board (spring) a book to read

2 Homework Policies E-DEVICES
You will be given ample time to complete assignments. If not submitted on the due date, a 20% per day penalty will be taken after grading. By the fifth day, it will be recorded as not handed in (NHI) E-DEVICES Electronic devices are not to be used in the classroom without permission. Please do not even “text mom” during class without permission. Discipline referrals will be made for violating this rule Plagiarized work (& all work YOU didn’t complete on your own) will also be recorded as NHI . It is not okay to missed the scheduled assessments. If you will not be in attendance, please notify me via Remind before class begins. Homework I do not believe in busy work. Homework is designed to help you participate intelligently in class the next day or to develop important skills. Reading homework will most often be followed by an assessment of some sort. **Homework is the responsibility of the student only. Students should ask ALL homework questions via Remind. Parents should not ask homework questions, as it is our mutual goal to prepare students for post-high school living where the parents will not be so near.

3 EXPECTATIONS Formative Assessment
It is my hope that you will participate by speaking up in discussions, allowing others to share as well. And I expect that you will make some mistakes. Actually, we learn best from making mistakes. When you make a mistake, I want you to figure out how to not make THAT mistake again and prepare to make the next mistake. With all of that eliminating of mistakes, you will grow. Parents, teachers, and leaders of all sorts make mistakes every day. It’s OKAY! You need to set a goal to achieve, make a plan to achieve it, implement that plan to the best of your ability and be ready to think, learn and grow as a student and as a person. Formative Assessment Formative assessment does not count toward your final grade. Sometimes, instead of a grade, I will provide feedback about your work. It provides an opportunity to learn what you should do to improve your skills. This makes it easier to take risks and try new skills without fear of it affecting your grades. Take advantage of this opportunity so that you can get them most from this course.

PLAN TO SUCCEED: Each evening, you need to review what transpired in class, even if there is no homework to “do.” We use REMIND for vocabulary lists R OH Oo M 4 9G People’s beliefs about their abilities have a profound effect on those abilities. Ability is not a fixed property; there is a huge variability in how you perform. People who have a sense of self-efficacy bounce back from failures; they approach things in terms of how to handle them, rather than worrying about what can go wrong. -- Albert Bandura Accounts: For STUDENTS to use.
