2 Buildings and WSNs and March 2011
Every year , in china , new building area is 2 Billion m2. 20 to 80 percent of system installation costs are consumed by wiring. 40 percent of total energy is used for buildings , the expense of the energy source is much more expensive WSN Applications in Building: Continuous environment monitoring Continuous safety Monitoring Continuous structure monitoring Low-cost and green Reduce the energy expense Without wiring requirements Easy to deploy Low installation and maintenance expense Network scalability

3 More WSN Application Examples In Building Monitoring
<month year> doc.: IEEE <doc#> March , 2011 More WSN Application Examples In Building Monitoring Civil infrastructures monitoring using WSN - An economic WSN organizes sensors and controllers in civil infrastructure(such as bridge , dam , airports) to monitor the structure of the infrastructure to avoid tragic happening and ensure the safety of the peoples life. Historical building monitoring & protection - The collected data is for a precise and quantitative understanding of the factors that may affect historical buildings , planning the preservation of such priceless treasures. Battery Power supporting is mandatory. Expect Battery operation lasts over 1years, even longer. <author>, <company>

4 Detail Example – ELC-WSN in commercial building monitoring
<month year> doc.: IEEE <doc#> March, 2011 Detail Example – ELC-WSN in commercial building monitoring Extra Low Consumption Wireless Sensor Network (ELC-WSN) nodes are deployed in every floor of the building and collect the temperature, fire, vibration, humidity, light, etc. The battery lifetimes should achieve at least several months, better years. The collected data is transmitted to the sink node and then to access point. The data will be replayed on the manager’s PC screen. So the manager can monitor the whole building environment and do some action when necessary. Sensor nodes Sink nodes <author>, <company>

5 Expected on tech requirements for ELC-WSN
<month year> doc.: IEEE <doc#> March 1, 2010 Expected on tech requirements for ELC-WSN Energy consumption Without wiring requirement, most of the WSN devices in building monitoring should be powered by battery and the consumption current is better at several µAs. Transmission distance one hop distance may be ~ 100m and with good diffraction performance in indoor environment Networking Network must be large enough to cover the whole building. Networking flexibility for complicated inner structure. Networking must be easy to re-deploy and to expand as requirement. i <author>, <company>

6 Why IEEE 802.15.4K Smart Application Data rate
March 1, 2010 Why IEEE K Smart Application Data rate - text and small pictures (< 300kb per picture) transmitted within one minute as the user passing the coverage of information node. Transmission distance - one hop distance ~ 100m Energy consumption - The applications with battery demands low energy consumption. Network - Networking flexibility is needed due to different inner structure. PAR of Low data rate (20 to 250 kb/s) Short distances (10 to 100m) Multi-year battery life multiple types of network supported
