3 What is Semiotics? Saussure’s thesis: Sign:
Relationship between two real world things is an arbitrary one Sign: Something that stands for something else A function of the signifier and the signified

5 Objective The purpose of this type of analysis is to what messages are being conveyed by the discourse This leads us into rhetorical analyses and discursive analyses We’ll get to these later

6 What you need to do Read and take notes on the Barthes article
What is he analyzing? What assumptions does he make during this reading? What are his results? Find an artifact related to your discourse community Bring all of this to our next class on Monday, April 16
