Human Population Dynamics
2
Current human population is 7.5 Billion people as of April 24, 2017
However, the ever growing population is not evenly distributed over the Earth’s surface
3
Ecological Footprint The impact imposed on the environment by the demand for natural resources It is a measure of the water and land resources and the pollution created to meet needs
5
Disease on the Rise The establishment of large permanent populations has led to increased population density, which has made it easier for disease carrying organisms to spread Pathogen is a disease causing agent, such as a microbe or fungus Epidemic is the spread of a disease beyond a very local population
6
Science, technology and Medicine
Major changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation, and technology occurred during the industrial revolution (1800s to 1900s)
7
Human demographics By 2050 the human population will exceed 9 billion people Population growth rates vary between nations greatly, ranging from 1% to 3% Industrialized countries have nearly zero population growth (ZPG)
8
Population pyramid A tool that shows the distribution of ages among the males and females in a population, also known as an age pyramid
9
Population Growth & Economic development
Conventional view is that population growth means more people are competing for limited natural and economic resources Consequences include a lower standard of living Demographic transition model: a diagram that illustrates changes in how people live to explain shifts in population sizes
