4. INTRO:
The two poems “Scavengers” and “Nothing’s Changed” both use depictions of place as an analogy for inequality. In other words, not just where you’re physically located, but you’re socially placed in terms of power. For Afrika, this inequality is racially based, whereas for Ferlinghetti, it is based on wealth. Moreover, the poems also differ in tone and the emotions of the poets. Ferlinghetti’s piece observes this inequality from a distance without strong emotion whereas for Afrika, the poem describes a personal experience. This means that his piece has a potent sense of animosity towards those who would continue to discriminate against his ethnic group.
