2 Two Kinds of Reading Social reading is reading for pleasure or survival. People and Sports Illustrated Academic reading is reading with a purpose. “Reading furnishes the mind only with the materials for knowledge; it is thinking which makes what we read ours.”—John Locke

3 Academic Reading Read with a red pen in hand (annotation).
Entails carrying on a dialogue with the writer (agreeing, disagreeing, connecting). Many students read passively, not actively.

4 Two Types of Annotation
Internal—inside of the book (questions, clarification, underlining, circling) External—notes include information you can use (left side of note sheet)

5 Reading Tips Set aside the time to read actively Silence is necessary
Monitor reading speed Understand content!!! Be able to explain reading Read widely

6 The biggest difference between University and High School courses is the demand for increased reading!
